Science Literacy Project programs involve outdoor, hands-on scientific exploration in natural environments including forest preserves. Activities may include hiking on natural trails, observing wildlife, environmental sampling, and using basic scientific tools and monitoring equipment. As with any outdoor program, participants may encounter uneven terrain, insects, weather changes, natural water areas, and plants that may cause irritation. Minor scrapes, insect bites, or exposure to environmental conditions are possible.
For safety, families should ensure participants arrive prepared with appropriate clothing, closed-toe shoes, a water bottle, and any necessary personal medical items such as inhalers or EpiPens. Science Literacy Project provides basic first aid when necessary and will contact emergency services if a serious situation arises. Parents or guardians are responsible for transportation to and from program locations and should not send participants who are ill.
Our programs emphasize respectful behavior toward others, staff, and the natural environment. Participants who engage in unsafe or disruptive behavior may be removed from activities if necessary to maintain a safe learning environment.
Photos may occasionally be taken during activities for educational or program communication purposes. Families may request that their child not be included in identifiable images.
Science Literacy Project takes reasonable steps to operate safe, well-supervised educational programs while recognizing that outdoor learning environments naturally involve variables beyond our control such as weather conditions or preserve access restrictions.
